Estimates show that as many as 60 million buffalo dominated the plains before the mid-1800's. When Theodore Roosevelt first arrive in North Dakota in 1883 to hunt bison, they had all but disappeared in the region, hunted to near extinction. Toady herds of bison have been reintroduced and are protected and thriving in Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
